There are three common methods for installing a new lawn: sod, hydroseed, and hand seeding. Hydroseeding is the most cost-effective option, but it takes up to two years to fully establish. It is also the best choice for drought tolerance. Sod provides an instant lawn, but it is more costly and requires an irrigation system for proper maintenance. Hand seeding is the least expensive method, but it may not always be successful and requires straw covering for protection.

Hydroseeding is becoming more and more popular as an effective means of establishing a new lawn.  It is a process that utilizes a mixed media of cellulose fiber, seed, fertilizer and water.  After being thoroughly mixed into a soupy consistency, it is then sprayed onto the lawn by a machine.  Sprouts will appear in as little as three days and a fully established lawn will be achieved in three weeks or less.

The best time to seed a lawn is from late summer until early fall (August 15 to September 20) while the soil is still warm. You can also seed a new lawn in April or May. Although late summer lawn seeding is best:  warm soil equals faster germination, watering will not be as much of a problem since there will be fewer weed problems, and the cool season grasses in the mix will have a better chance of getting established.
